What is This?
Festival of the LARPs is an annual FREE convention held at Brandeis University over the course of one weekend in April. Throughout that weekend, attendees have the chance to play in several theater-style LARPs (usually two to four hours in length) that they sign up for beforehand.
What is a Theater-Style LARP?
A theater-style LARP is a lot like an improvisational play. A set cast of pre-written characters, each with their own personality, goals, and motivations, are distributed to the players, and from there the players are free to interact with each other and the world while playing the part of their characters. There's no script, so almost anything can happen! Unlike "boffer-style" LARPing, theater-style games involve no physical combat and tend to focus more on interpersonal interaction and the telling of stories.
You might find yourself playing the leader of a war-torn nation, a down-on-their luck street performer, or the captain of a newly-designed intergalactic spacecraft. You'll be given a character sheet describing your personality, desires, and goals, and from there you will be free to pursue your character's own agenda by interacting with other players who are doing the same thing. Some may be allies, some may be enemies, but all of them are playing parts in the same developing story.
How Do I Sign Up?
Signing up for the convention is as easy as entering your contact information into the form accessed at the top of this page, where it says "Register." From there, you'll be contacted when the schedule of games is posted, and you'll have the chance to browse the games and decide which ones look most interesting to you. Once game signups open, attendees will have the chance to sign up for games in rounds.
What Happens Then?
The people who run the games you've signed up for (the Game Masters, or GM's) will usually send out a casting questionnaire via e-mail. Filling out this questionnaire will help the GM's understand what you'd like to do in the game. They can then use your answers to cast you in the part that will be the most fun for you. This way, you won't end up playing a vicious, cutthroat pirate when you really wanted to play an honorable commodore (or vice versa!)
Once you've returned your questionnaire, you will often receive a costume hint with your character's name and short description. Soon after, you'll get a full character sheet. Then, all you need to do is show up at the scheduled place and time and have fun!
Directions and Parking
Festival of the LARPs takes place at Brandeis University in Mandel Quad.
We've also put together a map with relevant places bookmarked, including the main entrance, Tower Parking lot, buildings where game will be held, and where (outside of con suite) to get food on campus. It's accessible here.
Please park in Tower Lot. We've checked with Public Safety, and confirmed that our event may use that lot. The lot may NOT be in use overnight, overnight being defined as "2am - 7am." Please note Brandeis's Festival of the Arts is also happening on campus. Ignore signs that will lead you to parking for Festival of the Arts. When coming into the main gate, turn right, not left.
Please note that Brandeis has one road, sometimes known as Loop Road, and that this road is one-way for the northern part of campus, and two-directional for the southern part of campus. To access Mandel Quad and Tower Lot, take a RIGHT coming into the main gate.
